The large-conductance, Ca²⁺- and voltage-activated K⁺ (BK) channels are widely distributed in the central nervous system, where they play diverse roles in regulating brain activity. The γ1 (LRRC26) subunit functions as a potent activator of BK channels, inducing a large shift in the voltage dependence of channel activation toward the hyperpolarized direction.
